  1. Law proposed by Georg Ohm in 1827 that states
  2. that the steady electrical current in a
  3. metallic circuit is directly proportional to
  4. the constant total electromotive force in the
  5. circuit. If a current I flows between two
  6. points in a conductor across which the
  7. potential difference (voltage) is E, then E/I
  8. is a constant (which is known as the
  9. resistance, R, between the two points). Hence
  10. E/I = R. Equations relating E, I and R are
  11. often quoted as Ohm's law, but the term
  12. `resistance' did not enter into the law as
  13. originally stated.
